Breaking into the world of RC vehicles is as easy as purchasing the right equipment. You may not be much of a challenge for seasoned racers, but the whole point behind RC racing and performance is that it is enjoyable.
RC is a family-oriented hobby community filled with many different shapes, sizes, and types of radio controlled vehicles. There is an RC controller to fit any size hands. Here are a few helpful tips to help you and your family immerse themselves in this technology driven community.
Types of electric RC motors
Entry-level RC enthusiasts should focus their efforts on finding the best suited electric motor for their vehicle. Electric motors are much easier to maintain than their Nitro counterparts, so newbies should start here.
There are two types of electric motors, brushed and brushless. Brushed motors are cheaper, but what they lack in cost, they also lack in quality. Brushless motors are much more efficient and faster.
Top RC vehicle brands
Traxxas – Traxxas is arguably the best brand in the business. These cars will not need as much maintenance, and they are definitely high quality. Purchasing a Traxxas vehicle means that you will have one of the fastest, and most durable RC vehicles on the track.
Exceed – Exceed produces a lower quality car, but they are much more affordable than other brands. Be prepared to do a bit of maintenance to keep the vehicle in shape. Most of the pieces are good quality, but some parts break often. Cars start around $100.
Tamiya – Tamiya is a classic brand in the RC community. They have produced quality cars for over 30 years. They are classically designed with “low-tech” capabilities, but Tamiya cars are in for the long haul.
Types of RC vehicles
If you are trying to learn more about the business of RC vehicles, it helps to know the different options available.
Street – These are the most common cars. They are typically faster, and roll best on flat surfaces. They are not best for off-roading, and they are definitely not known for their power.
Drift – Drift cars are similar to street cars, but they have slick tires for drifting. Sliding gracefully around tight curves is hard, but fun when mastered.
Buggy – Buggies work on or off-road, but are not the best suited for off-roading. Their lower wheelbase makes it challenging to get over things.
Truggy – Truggies are dual purpose as well, but they are better suited for off-roading. It is basically a buggy with monster truck tires.
Truck – Monster trucks are the best suited vehicles for off-roading. They do well when they flip, and have no problem climbing rugged terrain.
