Sound is an aspect of gaming that has been sorely neglected. So, it was with much excitement that we welcomed the announcement of the Nintendo Wii Doppler Effect. We think that this could usher in a revolution in game sound, if done properly and given enough attention.
Now comes along a new technology called Immersive Communications Environment from development company The Smart Internet Technology Cooperative Research Centre. ICE is intended to dynamically place spatial information into sound. People and things further away from you will sound further away, and things close to you will sound close. Further, things out of your auditory range will not be heard.
Auditory cues may prove to be one of the next major progressions in gaming technology and it seems that developers and game makers are starting to take it seriously for game mechanics rather than simple gloss and pomp.
