The game Dark Sector (Xbox 360 and PS3) is now out in the U.S. and will be out on April 4th here in the U.K. The game puts the player in the shoes of Hayden Tenno. The CIA sends him to Lasria (in Eastern Europe) on an assassination mission. This goes terribly wrong when an unknown alien enemy attacks him, leaving Tenno infected with the virus that gives him a glaive-like weapon growing from his arm.
The game is clearly influenced by Resident Evil 4, with an over the shoulder perspective offering a wide variety of weapons to use. The bladed glaive starts out as an excellent weapon that only gets better – giving you access to a glaive-point-of-view for better kills along with, a little later on, explosive damage. Powers continue to evolve through the game and keep the fun factor up.
A lack of HUD is always an interesting choice in a game, especially one with an evidently action style slant. However, it works really well with excellent controls and nothing making the game overly complicated. However, much like Gears of War, some have said the experience overall is a little bit much of ‘style over substance’.
For those of you who haven’t yet had a chance to play the game but have been waiting patiently for it from 2004 (anyone remember the technical video? I know that I do) I’d certainly recommend a play. One thing I will note before giving the link to the video is to make sure that parents are aware – this game is not suitable for children. There are quite a lot of blood and body parts. Anyway, the wait is over – follow the link and see how cool the game looks.
