It seemed to work for Radiohead last year when they released their In Rainbows album on a “pay what you think it’s worth” model, and now software company Eidos Interactive is looking to do the same with the latest incarnation of its Championship Manager football game.
Championship Manager 2010 for PC launches today, and can be purchased online for as little as one British penny (plus a handling fee of £2.50).
“This is the best Championship Manager the studio has ever made and we want as many people as possible to try the full new game,” said Championship Manager General Manager Roy Meredith.
Will it work? Championship Manager has a loyal fan base and could well convert many more if it’s available for £2.51 (about $4). It might even encourage users to buy the legitimate copy instead of getting it from a torrent site.
