Back in 1997, I read a news article about concept designs for new mobile phones that will come out in ten to fifteen years. One of the concepts was a ring that you put on your finger that is also a small mobile phone. It looked like it came out of a science fiction movie. We’re now at that time they were envisioning and even though a ring mobile phone has not arrived yet, miniaturization has allowed manufacturers to create a watch phone like the Burg5 Phone Watch.
The Burg5 Phone Watch looks cool as cool gadgets go. This gadget is a sure conversation piece the moment you use it. From the exterior, it looks just like an ordinary analog watch except for small buttons numbered 1 through 0 and a green and red “phone” buttons located in the 11 o’clock and 12 o’clock. But the interior is where the magic happens. Burg Ltd. Has managed to fit a mobile phone’s circuitry inside the watch case. You insert the SIM card in a slot on one side of the watch and the buttons are where you store phone numbers (you can store up to six numbers). The watch dial also has purpose. It glows blue if the reception is good and yellow if the reception is poor. The phone watch will even announce who is calling by announcing the numbers.
So how do you talk using the Burg5 Phone Watch? Well, the watch takes a page off Dick Tracy – it has a built in microphone and speakers so you just put your watch near your ear and speak. If you want to look a little more inconspicuous though, there is a hands-free kit that you attach to the phone so you can talk with more privacy.
The Burg5 Phone Watch retails for £99.99.
