Sony has announced the latest addition to its range of WALKMAN portable media players: the S540 Series.
This is Sony’s first video-enabled MP3 player to incorporate higher quality stereo speakers. Coupled with some proprietary technology to enhance bass and treble, it’s supposed to offer an improved listening experience when not using headphones.
Despite packing in those two speakers the whole player is just 10.2mm in thickness and sports a 2.4-inch LCD capable of displaying high-resolution video.
The Digital Linear Phase Speaker System is what improves speaker sound quality, but curiously it only works when you’re listening to music stored on the device, not video or FM radio.
Clear Audio, Clear Stereo and Clear Bass technologies are employed so that listening on the supplied headphones is also an improved experience.
As you’d expect, the unit handles a range of audio and video formats including rights-managed WMA and WMV. Other features include a voice recorder, up to 42 hours of listening time using headphones on a single charge (17h via the speakers).
All in all a fairly stylish addition to the WALKMAN range, coming to you from September.
